Kundalini Yoga in Vienna – What to expect

    Breath Control & Pranayama

An essential part of yoga is breathing. Breathing is a system of the body that can be controlled both consciously and unconsciously (or voluntarily and involuntarily). Through practice, unconscious control is gradually reprogrammed so that incorrect breathing patterns can be corrected.

A stressful daily life, anxiety, depression, "sucking in the stomach," accidents, allergies, bad habits - these are all factors that can disrupt our breathing pattern, which then gets stored in our involuntary control. Proper breathing focuses on the abdomen: when inhaling, the diaphragm moves downward to draw air into the lungs. The stomach must therefore make room and expand outward. When exhaling, the opposite happens: the diaphragm moves upward and the stomach should move inward toward the spine, pushing air out of the lungs.

Many people do the exact opposite, which occurs, among other things, with "paradoxical breathing" and brings negative effects with it.

With the right breathing exercises / breathwork exercises, as well as Pranayama, we can correct and improve our breathing in Kundalini Yoga. A properly functioning respiratory system brings numerous benefits for your physical and mental health. It impacts the entire nervous system, helps with shortness of breath or breathing difficulties, and offers significant advantages in sports. Additionally, nerve and glandular functions are balanced so that they can correctly regulate our body and mind.

A proper, relaxed breathing pattern also plays a major role in the body's healing process, as well as in fighting and preventing illnesses. Let’s use the breath as a tool to control these states and expand these positive effects.

    Asanas / Movement

In a typical Kundalini Yoga session, asanas - physical postures and movements - make up the largest part of the class.

Through these asanas, we do not only build strength and flexibility; they also stimulate our circulatory system and lymphatic system, along with our organs, glands, and nerves. Movement particularly supports the lymphatic system, allowing lymph (lymphatic fluid) to be drained more effectively from the body's tissues.

Kundalini Yoga & Hatha Yoga in Wien - Yoga mit Martin

In addition, it acts as drainage for the immune system - for example, foreign substances and pathogens such as bacteria are transported away through the lymphatic vessels and filtered in the lymph nodes. If your lymph nodes swell, it usually means that your immune system is actively working at that moment - a cold might already be on the way.

Due to a lack of movement, small blood vessels and lymphatic vessels (capillaries) in particular are not properly "flushed out" - substances are transported more slowly and toxins are broken down less efficiently → inflammation, "calcification," water retention, and frequent illnesses can be the result. Furthermore, a poor diet and smoking contaminate these vessels, increasing the risk of more severe illnesses over the course of life.

Movement also indirectly stimulates, massages, and activates organs, as well as the nervous and glandular systems. Additionally, your body becomes stronger and more flexible. You feel fitter and have more energy. Movement is therefore essential - a regular and consistent Kundalini Yoga practice can help.

    Meditation

Stress, rapid change, constant sensory overload, dissatisfaction, envy, jealousy, competitive pressure - these are just a few examples of what our psyche has to deal with. Poor sleep, no time for healthy nutrition, for oneself and others, and generally for a healthy lifestyle lead to more and more people suffering from depression and burnout. Our concentration and focus are impaired, often leading to despair because it feels impossible to get things done. Due to stress, the body feels as though it is in a constant state of high alert because it has been misconditioned by this lifestyle - and in the long run, that simply cannot be healthy.

Kundalini Yoga & Hatha Yoga in Wien - Yoga mit Martin

This is how our nervous and endocrine systems change - the body reacts by increasing the heart rate, releasing adrenaline, or taking similar measures. When these systems are out of balance, it leads to a "misinterpretation" by your body, which can result in depression. However, depression can also be viewed as a remarkable function of our body: it signals that something is wrong and that change is needed.

With meditation, one of our goals is to bring the stimulation and function of our glands back into balance. During this time, you have the opportunity to retrain your brain on how to respond in specific situations - that’s the underlying concept. It is also intended to support bodily healing, adjust your mindset, and strengthen both mind and body.

Furthermore, we learn once again to focus on a single thing for a few minutes without being distracted by a smartphone. Nowadays, most people have forgotten what it feels like to give the mind time to process experiences and let the body work in peace. In Kundalini Yoga, alongside relaxing meditations, there are also challenging ones where you cannot focus on anything other than the meditation itself - a powerful way to gain self-control.

    About Martin

Martin specializes in conveying an understanding of the body and mind in an accessible, easy-to-understand way.

After many years of practicing various yoga styles and Shaolin Kung Fu, he came into deeper contact with the style known as "Kundalini Yoga." Shortly thereafter, he began his formal yoga teacher training.

Martin continuously expands his knowledge, eagerly absorbing methods from effective styles (such as Hatha Yoga / Kundalini Yoga according to Dhirendra Brahmachari) alongside scientific and philosophical insights. He strives to pass this knowledge - and the benefits that stem from it - on to others to sharpen their awareness of the health aspects of life.

His style is shaped not only by physical practice, but also by mental engagement. Recognizing your own behavior and that of those around you is a long-term process. Taking a holistic view and developing an understanding of certain dynamics in our world can logically explain their effects.

Martin has spent many years focusing on physical fitness, a holistic healthy lifestyle, psychology, philosophy, and the mind. He completed his "Kundalini" Yoga Teacher Training (Yoga according to Harbhajan Singh Puri / Yogi Bhajan) with Sat Sarbat Kaur and Satmukh Singh (3aa-kundalini.com) at the Soami Retreat Resort (soami.at) on Lake Millstatt, which is run by Hildegard Biller.

He attended further advanced training programs, such as a seminar on addiction and trauma by SuperHealth, and gained deeper insights into yoga through inspiring individuals - such as Rainer Neyer in Kundalini Yoga according to Dhirendra Brahmachari, or Swami Shivanand Ji in authentic Hatha Yoga and Sutra Neti (a cleansing technique).

He has attended further training courses, such as a seminar on addictions and trauma by SuperHealth, and gained deeper insights into Kundalini Yoga according to Dhirendra Brahmachari through Rainer Neyer. Furthermore, through ongoing exchanges with his students, he continuously learns about many additional facets and challenges of life.

    Kundalini Yoga – FAQ

    Are prior qualifications/experience required?

No prior experience is required to join my Kundalini Yoga class. However, please feel free to inform me of any pre-existing medical conditions or physical limitations.

Is it possible to start anytime?

Upon agreement, joining at a later date is possible.

Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?

Only for outdoor classes. For indoor sessions, plenty of mats, blankets, and cushions are available.

What style of yoga is practiced?

The techniques in this class are inspired by Kundalini Yoga according to Harbhajan Singh Puri, Kundalini Yoga/Hatha Yoga according to Dhirendra Brahmachari, as well as Sukshma Vyayama by Dhirendra Brahmachari.

I also personally practice Bikram Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and Shaolin Kung Fu, which may influence my classes.

My goal is to pass on useful techniques and clearly explain their effects.

What does the yoga sessions look like?

In the class, we practice breathing exercises, physical movements and postures, as well as concentration exercises and meditations. The sessions are quite varied.

Do I need to be flexible?

Many people are hesitant about trying yoga because they feel they aren't flexible enough. Please don't worry—that's a misconception. I also demonstrate several variations so that everyone gets the greatest possible benefit.

    Does yoga help with procrastination?

A daily routine pursued with discipline is said to be a powerful remedy against procrastination. A yogic lifestyle goes hand in hand with daily routines. The practice of yoga and its effects can help strengthen your motivation to maintain such a routine. In addition, you will discover a few mindsets and concepts that can assist you in adjusting your life structure.

Does Kundalini Yoga help with ADHD?

The entire practice—and especially the concentration exercises, which in this style often "force" you to focus strictly on the task at hand—can alter your awareness of thought organization (through neuroplasticity). If you are able to participate as best as you can with ADHD, the practice can be helpful.

However, an environmentally induced dopamine dysregulation (for instance, triggered by smartphone addiction), which is often confused with ADHD, could be effectively managed through a yogic lifestyle in particular.

Nevertheless, please also seek medical advice.

    Can children participate?

Regular and intensive practice of Kundalini Yoga could overstimulate the glandular system and nervous system in children up to 13 years of age. Children at this age are considered "not stable" enough for this practice. Even more likely, they will simply get bored. There is yoga designed specifically for children, but I do not offer this.

    Is the class "spiritual"?

I try to explain the ideas behind concepts that seem spiritual as physically, psychologically, and anatomically as possible—essentially translating them into our modern language. Due to mistranslations and misinterpretations, these texts and practices often acquire their mystical quality, which is why many people in the West struggle to take yoga seriously.

When ancient texts are translated, quoted, and followed literally word-for-word, it quickly comes across as pseudo-spiritual. People often overlook how much the meaning of words and ways of expression evolve over centuries or millennia.

In my view, it is crucial to understand the processes in the body and, above all, to understand oneself before being ready for any so-called "higher mystical energy."

    What is Kundalini Yoga?

The goal of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the so-called "Kundalini," an "energy" said to lie dormant in the tailbone. You will discover in my course in Vienna what this actually means—and why the whole thing isn't nearly as pseudo-spiritual as it is often portrayed—over the course of my class in Vienna.

What are we going to do in Kundalini Yoga?

Through regular practice, the goal is to undergo a physical and mental "cleansing" so that the body's systems can function unhindered.

This process represents, among other things, a period of realization and learning. The idea is that one should first become physically and mentally capable of enabling an "awakening." In the course of this, you become aware of things—your "consciousness is expanded." This process could also be described as the "awakening of the Kundalini."

What this can mean in greater detail is something you will learn in my Kundalini Yoga class in Vienna.

    Do I get a certificate?

There is no certificate to be earned in my class. Instead, you will learn a lot about your body, gain inspiration, and receive practical ideas for your daily life, your health, and a fulfilling path forward.

    Is Kundalini Yoga dangerous?

On a physical level regarding joints, muscles, and so on, it is generally very safe, though you should naturally never push past your body's limits. Inside the body, the glandular system—and thus the hormonal system—is influenced, and organs are stimulated. This can initially lead to temporary discomfort or irritation, which usually subsides as your practice progresses.

This can also have an impact on an emotional level: you may suddenly perceive the world and your own life with greater clarity, which can bring up new and sometimes uncomfortable perspectives. If you are dealing with mental health struggles, you should definitely consult a medical professional beforehand. However, these are things that can happen not only through Kundalini Yoga, but also through activities like sports or deep conversations and personal insights.

At least in my classes, no one has reported any issues so far.

    What is "Kundalini Awakening"?

I am often asked about this lately because the term "Kundalini Awakening" is increasingly being misappropriated on social media for various practices aimed at inducing an "awakening of Kundalini energy" (for example, where one person lies on the floor while another guides them and places hands on their body). Some of these practices also utilize holotropic breathing—which is unfortunately often loosely termed "breathwork," or rebranded using buzzwords combining "breath" with "hypnotic," "trance," "psychedelic," etc., to market the technique as a proprietary brand.

While these practices can trigger emotional or motor responses (such as shaking), these effects are merely temporary. They do not bring about a lasting "awakening" or neuroplastic change. I do not consider them ineffective—they can certainly be a step along the way. However, they have little to do with the genuine concept of awakening the Kundalini. In truth, the "awakening" was already activated the moment you decided to take an interest in it.

I do not offer these practices. Instead, I provide a practice aimed at a lasting, sustainable "awakening"—one that is the result of years or even a lifetime of dedication. Over time, the true meaning of this becomes clearer and clearer.

In my class, I aim to explain in modern language what occurs in the brain, body, psyche, as well as the nervous and endocrine systems, using this perspective to translate ancient concepts.

I strongly distance myself from pseudo-spiritual and supernatural promises.
